This project, a major step towards sustainable ammonia production, was executed seamlessly without interrupting the plant's live operations.

thyssenkrupp Uhde has announced the successful commissioning and start-up of a state-of-the-art Hydrogen Recovery Unit (HRU) at the Fertil plant in Ruwais, United Arab Emirates, which is owned by Fertiglobe, a global leader in nitrogen fertilizer production and a pioneer in sustainable ammonia. This pivotal project represents a major stride toward more sustainable and energy-efficient ammonia production.

The newly commissioned HRU, which utilizes cutting-edge membrane separation technology, is designed to efficiently recover valuable hydrogen from the ammonia synthesis purge gas. This recovery allows for enhanced feedstock utilization, translating into a notable 6 percent increase in ammonia output. Following the revamp and successful start-up, the plant's daily ammonia capacity now stands at an impressive 2,120 metric tons (MTPD).

A key highlight of the project was the safe and successful implementation of the new unit while the plant remained in full operation. The scope of work, which included engineering, procurement, and site supervision, required outstanding coordination and engineering capabilities. All necessary tie-ins were meticulously engineered and installed in advance to ensure smooth and safe integration, a testament to the technical prowess of the thyssenkrupp Uhde team. The company’s ability to manage this complex implementation during live operations underscores its exceptional safety awareness and capability.

Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “This cutting-edge hydrogen recovery technology marks a significant step through a more resource-efficient production. By delivering innovative, efficient, and sustainable solutions combined with our implementation expertise, we create sustainable alternatives for our customer, to set new CO2-reduction standards.”

The operational efficiency gained through the HRU directly contributes to a meaningful reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per ton of ammonia produced. This aligns perfectly with Fertiglobe’s strategic goal to reduce its overall carbon footprint and improve plant efficiency, solidifying its position as an early mover in sustainable ammonia.

Ahmed El-Hoshy, CEO of Fertiglobe, hailed the commissioning as a milestone in the company’s Manufacturing Improvement Plan (MIP). He noted that the project is expected to deliver an annual Internal Rate of Return (IRR) on investment of over 25%, highlighting the strong financial justification for the sustainability-focused upgrade. “The project delivers an annual IRR on investment of over 25%, increasing ammonia production by up to 6% while reducing CO2 emissions, and aligns well with our commitment to fostering sustainable growth,” said El-Hoshy, acknowledging the seamless cooperation between the companies.
