A groundbreaking collaboration between global multi-energy company TotalEnergies and the resources-based manufacturing group RGE has secured a conditional license from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) to import 1 GW of clean firm power from Indonesia. This landmark project, a hybrid renewable power plant located in Indonesia's Riau Province, is set to become a vital artery for sustainable energy in the ASEAN region.

The equally-owned joint venture, Singa Renewables, announced today that the conditional license paves the way for the ambitious initiative, which combines a large-scale solar farm, a robust Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and a crucial subsea interconnector. In a further development today, the partners formalized their commitment to the subsea cable by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singapore Energy Interconnections (SGEI) for its joint development.

This pivotal moment follows the signing of a Co-Investment Agreement on May 28, in Jakarta, an event graced by the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

The Riau Province hybrid renewable power plant is designed to deliver Clean Firm Power – a reliable and consistent supply of renewable energy – to energy-intensive consumers in Singapore. Concurrently, it will also provide electricity to industrial complexes situated near the solar site within Riau Province.

TotalEnergies will leverage its extensive global experience in developing and managing large-scale energy projects, ensuring the technical prowess and operational efficiency of the initiative. RGE, with its deep roots and wide footprint in Indonesia and Singapore, will bring invaluable local expertise and understanding to navigate the regional landscape.

Helle Kristoffersen, President Asia and Executive Committee Member at TotalEnergies, expressed her gratitude to the Singaporean authorities, stating, “The project will contribute to Singapore’s goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050, while supporting Riau Province’s economic development in Indonesia. This initiative also illustrates TotalEnergies’ commitment to ASEAN’s energy transition and security of supply.” Her remarks emphasize the project's alignment with broader regional climate objectives and energy independence.

Echoing this sentiment, Imelda Tanoto, Managing Director at RGE, affirmed the company’s dedication to accelerating the region's clean energy transition. “The Conditional Licence is a key milestone that affirms our role in advancing the region’s collaboration and decarbonization goals as we remain focused on creating lasting value for communities, markets, and governments alike,” she commented. Tanoto's statement highlights RGE's focus on creating long-term, sustainable value across all stakeholders.

TotalEnergies is a global integrated energy company that produces and markets energies- oil and biofuels, natural gas, biogas and low-carbon hydrogen, renewables and electricity.
