Ammobia, Lummus Partner to Scale Modular Ammonia Technology

Ammobia and Lummus Technology will commercialize modular ammonia production, targeting lower costs, reduced emissions, and growing demand across energy markets.

Ammobia Inc., a San Francisco-based developer of modular ammonia production technology, has partnered with Lummus Technology LLC of Houston to license and deploy Ammobia’s ammonia production system globally. The agreement marks an important step toward commercializing Ammobia’s technology and expanding its use across emerging ammonia applications, particularly power generation, marine fuels, and energy storage and transportation.

Under the partnership, Ammobia’s proprietary “Haber-Bosch 2.0” process will become the first ammonia technology included in Lummus Technology’s portfolio. The collaboration combines Ammobia’s capital-efficient synthesis loop, or “synloop,” with Lummus’ extensive engineering capabilities, technology development expertise, project execution experience, and global commercial network.

The companies aim to provide customers with a more flexible and cost-effective route to ammonia production compared with conventional large-scale plants. Ammobia’s modular approach allows production capacity to be added incrementally, either through new greenfield facilities or by upgrading existing operating sites. This flexibility could help developers reduce upfront capital requirements and better match production capacity with local demand and available energy resources.

Ammobia CEO and Co-Founder Karen Baert said the company’s technology is designed to change the economics of ammonia production by enabling modular facilities rather than relying solely on the world-scale plants that have dominated the industry for decades. She added that Lummus’ engineering expertise, project delivery capabilities, and global relationships could accelerate commercial deployment while allowing Ammobia to remain focused on advancing its core technology.

Lummus Technology President and CEO Leon de Bruyn described the agreement as a significant addition to the company’s technology portfolio. He noted that the partnership could help make ammonia production more economical while lowering carbon emissions and reducing project costs. The technology could also support efforts to reduce emissions from shipping as ammonia gains attention as a potential clean maritime fuel.

Ammonia demand is expanding beyond its traditional role in fertilizer and chemical manufacturing. Ammonia currently serves as a key component in approximately 70% of fertilizers, supporting food production worldwide. At the same time, demand is expected to increase as ammonia gains traction in marine transportation, power generation, energy storage, and other industrial applications.

Grand View Research projects global ammonia production could increase by 58% by 2033, supported by these emerging applications. Ammobia’s modular technology is intended to address this broader market opportunity.

Initially, Ammobia and Lummus will concentrate their joint commercialization efforts on power-generation projects. Meanwhile, Ammobia will continue developing applications for fertilizer and industrial ammonia production.

Product & Chemical Commodity Price Impact

The partnership is bullish for ammonia supply capacity over the medium to long term, as modular production could lower capital requirements and make smaller-scale projects commercially viable. If widely adopted, Ammobia’s technology may increase regional ammonia availability, particularly for power generation and low-carbon applications, potentially easing supply constraints and limiting price spikes. However, the near-term impact on ammonia prices is likely limited, because commercial deployment and capacity additions will take time. Greater ammonia production could eventually place downward pressure on prices.
