Amogy and 2G Energy successfully demonstrated an ammonia-to-power system with natural gas flexibility, advancing reliable, low-carbon power solutions for industries.

Amogy and 2G Energy have successfully completed integrated ammonia-to-power testing at Amogy’s Houston facility, marking a major step toward commercial deployment of fuel-flexible power generation systems. The demonstration showcased a solution capable of producing electricity using either ammonia or natural gas, offering customers reliable on-site power while creating a practical pathway toward lower-carbon energy.

The integrated system, known as AMMDrive™, combines Amogy’s ammonia reforming technology with the 2G Agenitor 412 reciprocating engine-generator. During the testing process, Amogy’s reformer converted ammonia into a hydrogen-rich fuel stream, which then powered the 2G engine to generate electricity. The system successfully achieved the operational and performance standards required for future commercial applications.

The technology addresses the increasing demand for dependable on-site electricity, particularly from data centers and other energy-intensive industries that face grid capacity constraints and lengthy infrastructure expansion timelines. By supporting both natural gas and ammonia as fuel sources, the system enables businesses to rely on readily available natural gas in the short term while gradually transitioning to ammonia-based hydrogen as cleaner fuel supplies become more widely available.

In addition to electricity generation, the 2G engine can also operate in cogeneration mode, simultaneously producing usable thermal energy such as hot water. This combined heat and power capability enhances overall system efficiency and improves energy utilization for industrial facilities.

The successful demonstration confirmed the compatibility between Amogy’s ammonia reformer and 2G Energy’s engine platform, including fuel management, control systems, and integrated operations. This achievement significantly reduces technical barriers to commercial deployment and strengthens confidence in ammonia as an alternative fuel for distributed power generation.

Amogy CEO Seonghoon Woo said the successful testing validates the company’s ammonia-to-power platform and provides customers with a practical solution to meet immediate electricity requirements while preparing for long-term decarbonization. He emphasized that the technology allows organizations to overcome current power shortages without sacrificing future sustainability goals.

Pablo Hofelich, CEO of 2G Energy, stated that the collaboration highlights the flexibility of the company’s engine platform, which can efficiently operate with ammonia-derived hydrogen alongside conventional fuels. He noted that the partnership broadens opportunities for commercial adoption of fuel-flexible and lower-carbon power generation technologies.

Following the successful trial, both companies plan to further optimize the integration between the reformer and engine while preparing for commercial deployment. They are also evaluating joint customer projects, expanding market development initiatives, and supporting deployment planning across the United States, Asia, and other international markets, targeting growing demand from data centers and other power-intensive industries.
