CITGO Petroleum Corporation is moving forward with a $310 million Depentanizer Project at its Lake Charles Refinery in Louisiana, reinforcing the long-term competitiveness and operational capabilities of one of the United States' largest and most complex refining facilities.
The project will introduce new processing facilities and equipment designed to strengthen the refinery's naphtha upgrading capabilities. The initiative will allow CITGO to convert lower-value refinery streams into higher-value gasoline blend components, improving the economic value of its feedstocks. Once completed, the project is expected to provide greater operational flexibility while supporting CITGO's ability to respond to sustained U.S. transportation fuel demand.
Edgar Rincon, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at CITGO, said the investment demonstrates the company's focus on disciplined capital allocation and projects that improve the resilience and strength of its refining operations. He also highlighted the strategic importance of the Lake Charles facility to CITGO, its customers and the wider U.S. energy market.
Beyond refinery operations, the investment is expected to generate economic benefits across Southwest Louisiana. Construction activities will create additional opportunities for contractors, while local suppliers and service providers are also expected to benefit. The project will further support the refinery's existing workforce and reinforce the facility's role in the regional energy economy.
The Lake Charles Refinery has operated in Louisiana since 1944, when it was established to support aviation fuel requirements during World War II. Over the decades, the facility has expanded significantly and become CITGO's largest refinery. It currently produces a broad range of products, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, petrochemicals and other refined products used across the U.S. economy.
The refinery's location along the Calcasieu Ship Channel provides an important logistical advantage. Its access to pipelines, marine transportation and other distribution infrastructure enables CITGO to source different crude grades and efficiently transport refined products to major markets.
The Depentanizer Project will build on these existing advantages by improving the refinery's ability to process domestic light crude and generate additional gasoline blending components. This could help CITGO optimize its refining yields and respond more effectively to changing market conditions.
The project is targeted for completion and commercial operation in 2029. CITGO plans to continue coordinating with employees, contractors and local stakeholders throughout the engineering, construction and commissioning phases.
Impact on Products and Chemical Commodity Prices
The project should have a positive impact on CITGO's gasoline production efficiency by converting lower-value naphtha streams into higher-value gasoline blend components. Greater processing flexibility could improve refinery margins and strengthen gasoline component availability in the U.S. Gulf Coast over the long term.
