The collaboration includes the integration of advanced technologies and catalysts to process diverse crude types and increase local production of critical fuels and petrochemicals.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE in Lekki, Nigeria, has announced a landmark agreement with Honeywell to supply advanced technology, services, proprietary catalysts, and essential equipment for a major expansion project. This strategic collaboration is set to double the refinery's production capacity from the current 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to an astonishing 1.4 million bpd by 2028. This move is not merely an increase in scale; it is a transformative step that will catapult the facility into the position of the world’s largest petroleum refinery.

The expansion is designed to enable the Dangote refinery to process a wider spectrum of crude oil grades, improving flexibility and operational efficiency. By leveraging Honeywell's sophisticated refining and petrochemical processing solutions, the facility aims to significantly reduce production costs, improve efficiency, and increase overall throughput. This increase in capacity and capability is expected to drastically reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported fuels.

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, highlighted the profound impact of this continued partnership. “Our continued collaboration with Honeywell marks a significant milestone not only for Dangote’s refinery, but for Nigeria’s energy sector as a whole,” Dangote stated. He added that the adoption of Honeywell's proven, advanced technologies will enable the refinery to "set new production standards for the industry" while actively contributing to the nation’s energy independence and economic vitality.

The existing relationship, spanning nearly a decade, has seen Honeywell providing essential process technology to the Lekki facility. The new expansion project will strategically maximize the use of the existing infrastructure and equipment, providing the greatest return on investment and accelerating the project timeline, ultimately speeding the critical supply of refined products to the market.

Rajesh Gattupalli, President of Honeywell UOP, affirmed the company's commitment, noting that the work with Dangote exemplifies how "innovation and collaboration can help enhance regional energy independence and support Africa’s growing energy needs.”

Beyond fuels, the agreement also significantly boosts the refinery's petrochemical output. Dangote will license Honeywell’s Oleflex technology, a process that converts propane into high-value propylene using catalytic dehydrogenation. This addition will enable the production of 750,000 metric tons per year of propylene, raising the refinery's total production of polypropylene—a key component in plastics and packaging materials—to 2.4 million metric tons per year.

Currently, the Lekki facility stands as the largest single-train refinery globally, already producing high-specification Euro-V quality gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.
