Evonik launches advanced isodewaxing catalysts using mesoporized zeolites to boost fuel yield, efficiency, quality, and sustainability in refining processes.

Evonik has introduced an advanced generation of isodewaxing catalysts designed to significantly improve the efficiency and output of fuels and lubricants manufacturing. These newly developed catalysts combine Evonik’s extensive experience of more than 75 years in catalyst engineering and precious metal applications with innovative mesoporized zeolite technology developed by the Belgium-based company Zeopore. This collaboration brings together proven industrial expertise and cutting-edge material science to deliver enhanced performance for refiners and renewable fuel producers. The result is a solution that enables higher yields of valuable end products while simultaneously improving fuel quality and overall operational efficiency.

The key innovation lies in the optimized porosity of the zeolite structure within the catalysts. By introducing mesopores, the catalysts allow better accessibility to active catalytic sites. This structural enhancement intensifies the isomerization process, which is essential for improving fuel properties, while minimizing undesirable cracking reactions. As a result, there is greater selectivity in the conversion process, reduced formation of light gases, and improved hydrogen utilization. These combined benefits contribute to a more sustainable production process by lowering carbon dioxide emissions and maximizing throughput, particularly when dealing with complex or renewable feedstocks.

Testing and performance evaluations have demonstrated the substantial advantages of these catalysts. In diesel dewaxing applications, they achieve up to a fivefold reduction in product losses compared to traditional catalyst systems, all while maintaining superior activity. In the production of base oils, the catalysts enable the recovery of a notable portion of lubricants that would otherwise be lost during the dewaxing stage. Another important feature is their feedstock flexibility; the mesoporized design supports consistent and efficient conversion across a wide range of hydrocarbon inputs. This adaptability is especially valuable as refiners increasingly shift toward producing low-carbon fuels such as sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel.

Evonik considers zeolite mesoporization a crucial advancement in catalyst development and has identified Zeopore as a leading supplier capable of producing such materials at an industrial scale. By integrating these advanced zeolites into its catalyst portfolio, Evonik aims to leverage its global presence and long-standing expertise to deliver high-performance solutions to the market. This strategic collaboration is expected to support refiners worldwide in meeting evolving industry demands, particularly the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable fuel production.

Company representatives have emphasized the significance of this development. Michael Frey, responsible for the Process Catalysts and Adsorbents product line, highlighted that the new catalysts enhance yields, improve cold flow properties, and reduce environmental impact. Similarly, Zeopore’s leadership expressed confidence that the partnership will expand the reach of mesoporous zeolite technology, enabling refiners to produce higher-quality fuels while advancing economically viable sustainable energy solutions.
