MB Energy and Metafuels have strengthened their collaboration to accelerate the development of Europe’s synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) value chain, aiming to connect fuel production with aircraft deployment. The agreements were signed during the opening of Metafuels’ demonstration plant in Switzerland and represent a step toward establishing a resilient, independent and fully integrated supply network for next-generation aviation fuels.
The partnership will initially support the development of Metafuels’ Turbe project in Rotterdam, which is targeted for commercial launch in 2030. Under the collaboration, the two companies will address several critical elements required for large-scale e-SAF adoption, including market access, fuel blending, infrastructure, logistics, certification and information management.
A major objective of the partnership is to address the infrastructure challenges that could restrict the deployment of synthetic aviation fuels. While production technologies are advancing, transporting, certifying, blending and delivering e-SAF to airports and aircraft remain important hurdles. MB Energy and Metafuels intend to develop an end-to-end solution capable of moving certified and blended e-SAF from production facilities to aircraft fuel systems.
The collaboration could also extend into feedstock supply. Under a proposed methanol arrangement, MB Energy could become a potential supplier of methanol required for Metafuels’ production process. Metafuels uses renewable methanol as the feedstock for its technology, converting it into aviation fuel designed to reduce the carbon intensity associated with conventional jet fuel.
For Metafuels, the agreement forms part of its broader strategy to establish a reliable supply chain ahead of the Turbe project’s expected 2030 start-up. The company aims to create a supply network that is less exposed to geopolitical disruptions and other global events that can affect sustainable aviation fuel availability. Partnerships covering feedstocks, transportation, infrastructure and fuel delivery are therefore expected to play a central role in its commercialization strategy.
MB Energy brings expertise in global energy trading, logistics, infrastructure and certification to the collaboration. These capabilities could help establish additional supply pathways and support the scaling of e-SAF across European aviation markets.
The opening of Metafuels’ demonstration facility further highlights progress toward commercializing methanol-to-jet technology. Both companies emphasized that successful e-SAF deployment will require more than technological innovation. Regulatory clarity, dependable feedstock availability, transportation networks and aviation-compatible infrastructure will also be essential.
With the partnership, MB Energy and Metafuels are seeking to establish an integrated framework that can move synthetic aviation fuel from renewable feedstocks through production, certification and logistics to final aircraft use. The initiative could contribute to Europe’s efforts to develop lower-carbon aviation fuels and strengthen domestic supply security.
Chemical Commodity Price Impact
The collaboration is bullish for e-SAF and renewable methanol demand because it creates an integrated pathway from feedstock to aviation fuel and supports Metafuels’ planned 2030 commercialization. Increased renewable methanol consumption could gradually strengthen demand for methanol, particularly low-carbon grades, although the immediate price impact is likely limited because commercial-scale volumes remain years away. Conventional jet fuel may face longer-term competitive pressure as synthetic alternatives scale, while demand for catalysts, hydrogen and renewable-power inputs could increase. For ChemAnalyst-tracked commodities, methanol prices could receive modest structural support over time, but near-term pricing should remain primarily driven by conventional supply-demand fundamentals and energy costs.
