Swedish green hydrogen technology provider Metacon AB has officially entered the burgeoning Moroccan green hydrogen market, securing a significant contract to deliver a 1 MW pressurized alkaline electrolysis pilot plant. This strategic move, initially hinted at in a press release on March 19, 2025, marks a crucial first step for a major renewable energy company in Morocco with approximately 2,000 MW of renewable assets under its belt, primarily in wind power. The total value of the turnkey contract amounts to EUR 1,820,600.

The contracted electrolysis plant will be engineered and supplied by Metacon as a complete, containerized system, ready for deployment at the customer's site. This pilot project is specifically designed to serve as a vital platform for the technical optimization of pressurized alkaline electrolyzers directly coupled with wind turbines. The insights and data gleaned from this initial phase will be instrumental in paving the way for the customer's ambitious plans for large-scale industrial production facilities dedicated to green hydrogen, e-fuels, and green ammonia within Morocco.

This development underscores the rapidly emerging green hydrogen market across several North African nations, a region poised for substantial growth driven by its abundant renewable energy resources. Metacon's client, already a dominant force in African wind power investments, has publicly stated its strategic intent to become a leading green hydrogen producer in Morocco and the broader Northern Africa region.

Christer Wikner, President & CEO of Metacon, expressed his enthusiasm about this significant win, stating, "I am very happy to announce that Metacon has won this contract with the regional energy leader in Morocco. This is hopefully the beginning of a long-term relation for realizing their ambitions for large-scale production of green hydrogen, e-fuels and green ammonia in Morocco and beyond."

Metacon AB (publ) specializes in the development and manufacturing of advanced energy systems for the production of fossil-free "green" hydrogen. Within its Electrolysis business unit, the company collaborates closely with PERIC Hydrogen Technologies, a global leader based in Handan, China, to offer comprehensive electrolysis plants tailored for large-scale hydrogen production. Furthermore, Metacon is actively involved in the expanding clean transport sector, providing production-integrated hydrogen refueling stations.

The company's Reforming business unit leverages Metacon's patented HIWAR® technology, which enables hydrogen generation through catalytic steam reforming of biogas or other hydrocarbons, including bioethanol. The research and development efforts for Metacon's reforming products are spearheaded by its wholly-owned subsidiary, Metacon S.A., located in Patras, Greece. This division focuses on catalytic process chemistry and the creation of advanced, compact reformers designed for high-efficiency hydrogen production. With this strategic entry into the Moroccan market, Metacon positions itself as a key enabler in the region's transition towards a sustainable energy future.
