Norsk e-Fuel and Braskem Team Up to Convert Captured Carbon into Durable, Next-Generation Plastics

Norsk e-Fuel and Braskem partner to integrate e-Naphtha into plastics, advancing circularity by transforming captured carbon into durable, low-carbon products.

Norsk e-Fuel AS, a key innovator in Power-to-Liquid (PtL) technologies, has entered into a strategic partnership with Braskem, one of the world’s leading producers of polymers and biopolymers, to evaluate how e-Naphtha can be incorporated into the global plastics supply chain. Through this collaboration, the two companies aim to accelerate the creation of plastics derived from captured carbon—carbon that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere—thereby furthering their shared commitment to advancing circularity and building a lower-carbon future.

Norsk e-Fuel is at the forefront of industrializing PtL technology, focusing on building large-scale facilities that convert renewable electricity, water, and captured CO2 into synthetic fuels and chemical feedstocks. As part of its expansion plan, the company intends to have at least three industrial plants operational by 2032. Together, these facilities are expected to produce over 200,000 tons of e-Fuels each year. A significant portion—approximately one-quarter—of this projected output could be supplied as e-Naphtha, a crucial feedstock widely used in the production of various plastic materials. This positions e-Naphtha as a potentially transformative solution for decarbonizing plastics manufacturing.

Braskem, through its sustainability strategy “Keeping Carbon in the Loop,” is working to shift the plastics industry toward renewable, circular, and carbon-optimized pathways. The company has already commercialized I’m green™ bio-based polyethylene, a renewable plastic made using sugarcane ethanol, and continues to develop certified mass-balance solutions for markets where segregated renewable feedstocks are not yet viable. By exploring the use of e-Naphtha as a raw material for producing polypropylene and other key polymers, Braskem aims to broaden its portfolio with next-generation plastics that offer a substantially lower climate impact.

According to Lars Bjørn Larsen, Chief Commercial Officer at Norsk e-Fuel, e-Naphtha represents far more than a secondary product of e-Fuel production. “e-Naphtha is more than a by-product; it is a valuable feedstock for creating long-lasting, circular products,” he stated. Larsen emphasized that by capturing carbon and embedding it into durable, recyclable materials, the partnership ensures that carbon remains in circulation instead of re-entering the atmosphere.

Walmir Soller, Vice President for North America, Europe, and Asia (NAMEA) and CEO of Braskem BV, reinforced the importance of carbon-circular plastics in achieving long-term sustainability goals. “Plastics are essential to modern life, and by producing them with captured carbon, we keep that carbon in the economy—not in the air,” he said. Soller added that this collaboration underscores Braskem’s commitment to innovation and to designing value chains that promote circularity and support the global push toward carbon neutrality.

Through this new partnership, Norsk e-Fuel and Braskem will work on creating a robust framework to integrate e-Naphtha into plastic manufacturing processes. Their efforts will include assessing market needs, evaluating emerging business opportunities, and engaging customers seeking more circular and lower-carbon materials. The collaboration also highlights the critical role of carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies in reshaping the plastics sector by recirculating carbon through durable products rather than emitting it into the atmosphere. By aligning technological innovation with sustainability goals, both companies aim to demonstrate how captured carbon can serve as a foundation for long-lasting materials and a more circular industrial model.
