Oman's Nama Power and Water Procurement (PWP) has initiated a search for a consultant to conduct an initial assessment of a significant green hydrogen-based independent power project, projected to have a capacity of up to 1 GW. This move underscores Oman's strategic pivot towards sustainable energy sources and its ambition to become a key player in the nascent green hydrogen economy. The deadline for submitting proposals for this consultancy role is June 21, 2026.

The selected consultant will be tasked with undertaking a comprehensive techno-economic study to ascertain the feasibility of developing a power project within Oman that can operate entirely on hydrogen. This involves a detailed evaluation of the technical viability, economic attractiveness, and overall sustainability of utilizing green hydrogen for large-scale power generation.

This proposed 1 GW green hydrogen project is a critical component of Oman's broader national strategy to diversify its energy mix and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. The Sultanate has been actively investing in and developing its renewable energy infrastructure. Recent developments include the operation of the 500 MW Manah I solar project and the selection of developers for another 500 MW solar-plus-storage project. Furthermore, Oman is home to a substantial polysilicon factory, highlighting its engagement across various segments of the renewable energy supply chain. The PWP has also previously sought consultants for the development of other solar projects, demonstrating a consistent drive towards expanding its renewable energy capacity.

The emphasis on green hydrogen reflects a growing global trend towards decarbonization and the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier.
