Black Bayou Energy Hub will invest $1.6 billion in Louisiana natural gas infrastructure, boosting storage, transportation capacity and LNG connectivity.

Black Bayou Energy Hub, LLC has announced a $1.6 billion investment to expand its Lafayette headquarters and develop major natural gas infrastructure in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. The project is aimed at strengthening the state’s rapidly expanding LNG corridor while supporting rising natural gas requirements from LNG exporters, utilities, power generators, pipeline operators and manufacturers.

The development is expected to generate 23 direct new jobs while retaining five existing positions across the two locations. Louisiana Economic Development (LED) estimates that the investment could create another 35 indirect employment opportunities, bringing the potential total to 58 jobs across the Southwest Louisiana and Acadiana regions. Construction activity is expected to support more than 1,000 jobs at peak.

The centerpiece of the investment will be located around the Black Bayou salt dome in Cameron Parish, with infrastructure extending into neighboring Calcasieu Parish. The facility will provide natural gas blending, balancing, storage and transportation services, improving connectivity across the Gulf Coast. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, while commercial operations are expected to commence in late 2028.

Black Bayou Energy Hub was established to develop natural gas infrastructure around the Black Bayou salt dome and is majority-backed by global energy and commodities company Mercuria. The investment reflects growing demand for flexible natural gas infrastructure as Louisiana attracts substantial LNG and energy-related capital.

According to LED, more than $48 billion in LNG projects have been announced in Louisiana since 2024, creating increasing requirements for supporting pipelines, storage facilities and other energy infrastructure. Black Bayou’s project is therefore positioned to serve both existing LNG developments and future industrial investments across the region.

Alongside the Cameron Parish project, Black Bayou will expand its Lafayette headquarters to accommodate continued corporate, engineering, administrative and operational activities. The headquarters expansion is expected to create six direct positions, with an average annual salary of approximately $195,000, while retaining five current jobs. LED estimates nine additional indirect jobs will result from the Lafayette investment.

Louisiana is supporting the project through a competitive incentives package that includes LED FastStart workforce development assistance and $1 million from the Economic Development Award Program for infrastructure improvements. Black Bayou is also expected to participate in the state’s High Impact Jobs and Industrial Tax Exemption Programs.

Overall, the investment is expected to strengthen Southwest Louisiana’s natural gas network, improve supply flexibility and reinforce the region’s role as a major hub for LNG and energy-intensive industrial activity.

Chemical Commodity Price Impact

The expansion should have a positive long-term impact on natural gas infrastructure and LNG-related demand, particularly as additional storage, balancing and transportation capacity improves supply reliability along the Gulf Coast. Higher connectivity could support increased LNG exports and gas consumption from power generation and manufacturing. For ChemAnalyst-tracked commodities, stronger LNG activity could indirectly support methanol, ammonia, hydrogen and other gas-intensive chemical production economics by improving feedstock availability. However, the $1.6 billion investment itself is unlikely to cause an immediate sharp price movement. Over the medium term, stronger gas demand could place modest upward pressure on natural gas prices, potentially raising production costs for gas-dependent chemicals.
