Fathopes Energy and MotionECO Forge Major UCO Supply Pact to Accelerate Global SAF Production

Fathopes Energy and MotionECO will supply 200,000 MT of used cooking oil annually, strengthening global SAF production and aviation decarbonization efforts.

Fathopes Energy and MotionECO recently signed a significant cross-border pact to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) feedstock. This agreement aims to secure 200,000 metric tons of used cooking oil (UCO) annually for SAF production. The collaboration establishes a crucial supply chain to support the aviation industry's decarbonization efforts.

Fathopes Energy, a Singapore-based company, specializes in supplying and trading marine fuels, biofuels, and lubricants. MotionECO, based in China, focuses on low-carbon sustainable energy technology. MotionECO will collect UCO from China, acting as the primary feedstock source. Fathopes Energy will then supply this UCO to its partners in Europe and Singapore for conversion into SAF.

The partnership began with a successful first shipment of 5,000 metric tons of UCO to Europe in December 2023. The companies plan to scale up operations quickly, targeting the annual 200,000 metric ton supply by 2026. This initiative highlights UCO's growing importance as a critical and sustainable feedstock for SAF production globally.

This pact directly addresses the aviation industry's urgent need to reduce its carbon footprint. Airlines face increasing pressure to meet stringent emission reduction targets. SAF offers a viable solution, and its production is expected to triple in 2024, reflecting the rising demand. The agreement supports global sustainability goals, including those outlined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED) III.

The agreement creates a stable and reliable supply chain for SAF feedstock. This stability is vital for the nascent SAF market, fostering its growth and reducing the aviation sector's reliance on fossil jet fuels. By utilizing a waste product like UCO, the partnership also promotes a circular economy model, turning waste into a valuable resource. This collaboration strengthens the global infrastructure needed to scale SAF production effectively.

Utilizing UCO for SAF production offers substantial environmental advantages. It significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional jet fuel. Furthermore, repurposing used cooking oil prevents its improper disposal, which can harm the environment. This cross-border effort advances global sustainability goals and helps the aviation industry transition towards a greener future.

Impact on Products and ChemAnalyst-Traced Chemical Commodity Prices

The agreement is expected to strengthen the global supply chain for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by ensuring a long-term supply of 200,000 metric tons of used cooking oil (UCO), a key renewable feedstock. Rising demand for UCO is likely to tighten its availability, encouraging higher collection rates and increased investment in waste oil recovery infrastructure. As SAF production expands, demand for renewable feedstocks and biofuel processing chemicals will continue to rise, supporting growth across the biofuels value chain. From ChemAnalyst's perspective, the development is expected to exert upward pressure on Used Cooking Oil (UCO) prices due to stronger procurement by SAF producers. Prices of Virgin Vegetable Oils such as Palm Oil, Soybean Oil, and Rapeseed Oil may also find support if UCO availability becomes constrained and refiners increasingly turn to alternative feedstocks. Meanwhile, conventional fossil-based jet fuel demand could face gradual substitution over the long term, although its immediate pricing impact is expected to remain limited.
