Jordan signed a $1 billion agreement to develop Aqaba’s first utility-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production facility.
Jordan has taken a significant step towards its clean energy goals by signing a $1 billion investment agreement for the development of its first utility-scale green ammonia and hydrogen production facility in Aqaba. The agreement was formally signed by Jordan's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Jordan Green Ammonia (JGA), a consortium comprising Poland's Hynfra and UAE-based Fidelity Group, with Prime Minister Jafar Hassan presiding over the ceremony. This landmark deal follows cabinet approval earlier in the month, marking Jordan's official entry into the global hydrogen economy.
The project entails the construction of an integrated, off-grid facility that will operate independently of the national electricity grid. It will be powered by approximately 550 megawatts (MW) of solar energy, supported by 500 megawatt-hours (MWh) of advanced energy storage systems. Utilizing water electrolysis with solar power, the plant aims to produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, primarily for export to high-demand markets in Europe and Asia. Danish engineering firm Topsoe will provide its ammonia synthesis technology for the conversion of green hydrogen into ammonia. Financial closure for the project is anticipated by 2027, with commercial operations scheduled to commence in 2030.
This investment is a crucial component of Jordan's energy transition strategy and reflects the Kingdom's commitment to climate action. It is projected to mitigate approximately 200,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year compared to conventional ammonia production methods that rely on natural gas.
Economically, the $1 billion investment represents a substantial influx of foreign direct investment, validating Jordan's modernized legislative framework designed to attract "green" capital. The project is expected to create new employment opportunities and facilitate the transfer of high-end energy technology, contributing to local economic development. Geopolitically, the initiative aims to strengthen Jordan's position as a regional hub for green industries and clean fuels, opening new export opportunities and enhancing its role in the global clean energy market. From an industry-specific perspective, this project signifies a "qualitative leap" for Jordan's domestic energy sector, promoting the growth of its renewable energy capabilities and establishing a significant presence in the burgeoning green hydrogen and ammonia ecosystem.
