Sapphire Gas Expands Southwest LNG Footprint With Spectrum Deal

George Orwell 09-Sep-2026
Sapphire Gas Solutions acquires Spectrum LNG assets, strengthening Southwest LNG production, supply control, storage capacity, and long-term vertical integration.

Sapphire Gas Solutions, a provider of distributed energy infrastructure, has acquired selected assets from Spectrum LNG, a small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer, as part of its strategy to expand LNG operations across the U.S. Southwest. The transaction includes the operating Desert Gas LNG Plant in Ehrenberg, Arizona, and a development site in Stroud, Oklahoma, providing Sapphire with additional production capacity and future expansion opportunities.

The acquisition strengthens Sapphire’s position in the Southwest and Southern California by adding LNG production to its existing natural gas service portfolio. It also supports the company’s ambition to establish one of the largest vertically integrated merchant LNG platforms in the United States. By controlling more stages of the supply chain, Sapphire expects to improve supply reliability, operational flexibility, and customer service while expanding its geographic reach.

Located close to the Arizona-California border, the Desert Gas LNG Plant has approximately 100,000 gallons of LNG storage capacity and can produce around 76,000 gallons per day. The facility receives natural gas for feedstock and fuel through TC Energy’s North Baja pipeline and supplies LNG to municipal, commercial, and industrial customers across the region.

The facility’s existing market position provides Sapphire with a strong foundation for growth. Spectrum LNG has increased LNG deliveries to customers by more than 15% annually since 2021, highlighting rising demand for small-scale LNG and dependable natural gas solutions in the region. Sapphire plans to build on these established customer relationships while expanding LNG services for municipalities and industrial users seeking alternatives to conventional energy infrastructure.

The Oklahoma site adds another potential growth avenue for Sapphire, allowing the company to increase its LNG production and distribution capabilities over time. The transaction follows Sapphire’s recent acquisition of EDGE LNG and its strategic partnership with Antin Infrastructure Partners, demonstrating an aggressive expansion strategy in the distributed energy and LNG sectors.

Sapphire CEO Sam Thigpen said the Spectrum assets provide an established production base at a time when demand for flexible and reliable natural gas continues to increase. Vertical integration will allow Sapphire to manage the LNG molecule from production and transportation through to the final customer, potentially improving supply-chain efficiency and strengthening its competitive position.

Spectrum LNG CEO Ray Latchem said the transaction will enable the assets to benefit from Sapphire’s established regional platform while allowing Spectrum to focus on expanding its operations in Alaska.

Chemical Commodity Price Impact

The acquisition is moderately bullish for LNG and natural gas prices in the Southwest over the medium term, as Sapphire gains greater control over production, storage, transportation, and customer supply. However, the additional 76,000 gallons/day of LNG capacity could improve regional availability and partially limit price spikes during periods of tight supply. For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, the impact is largely indirect. Higher LNG and natural gas demand could raise feedstock and energy costs for ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, and other gas-intensive chemicals, potentially supporting prices. Conversely, improved gas infrastructure and supply reliability could reduce volatility and moderate production-cost increases.
