TotalEnergies Showcases MethaneLive at VivaTech to Enhance Real-Time Methane Emissions Monitoring and Reduction

Nicholas Sparks 22-Jun-2026

TotalEnergies launched MethaneLive, a real-time AI-powered methane monitoring system using 13,000 sensors to detect, analyze, and reduce emissions globally.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of VivaTech, TotalEnergies introduced MethaneLive, an advanced global methane emissions monitoring center designed to strengthen its efforts in minimizing methane releases across its energy operations. The innovative platform combines real-time operational data, sophisticated analytics, and advanced algorithms to identify, quantify, and analyze methane emissions, enabling faster and more effective corrective measures. Through this digital initiative, the company aims to improve operational efficiency while supporting its long-term commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

As part of its methane reduction strategy, TotalEnergies achieved a major milestone in 2025 by deploying a permanent real-time methane monitoring infrastructure throughout all its operated Upstream facilities, including both onshore and offshore sites. The system comprises approximately 13,000 sensors strategically installed across its global operations, making TotalEnergies the first and currently the only company in the oil and gas sector to implement such a comprehensive real-time methane monitoring network across all of its operated assets.

The large-scale deployment of sensors continuously generates substantial volumes of operational data. To transform this information into meaningful insights, MethaneLive integrates cutting-edge digital technologies with the knowledge and experience of dedicated monitoring teams. The platform analyzes incoming data in real time, allowing experts to quickly detect irregularities, notify operational teams, determine the underlying causes of methane releases, and recommend suitable maintenance and remediation actions.

Since becoming operational in early 2026, MethaneLive has already demonstrated significant effectiveness in identifying methane emissions that traditional monitoring methods could have overlooked. The system successfully detected 35 instances of fugitive methane emissions across various facilities. By identifying these hidden leaks early, TotalEnergies was able to carry out targeted maintenance activities, reducing unnecessary methane releases and improving the reliability of its industrial operations.

The extensive database generated by the monitoring network also creates a strong foundation for the integration of advanced agentic artificial intelligence solutions. By utilizing AI-driven analysis, TotalEnergies seeks to further optimize methane management by identifying the equipment with the highest emission potential, enhancing leak detection capabilities, and prioritizing intervention efforts where they can deliver the greatest environmental impact. The combination of human expertise, real-time information, and intelligent technologies is expected to significantly improve the company’s ability to achieve its emissions reduction targets.

Methane is recognized as one of the most powerful greenhouse gases contributing to climate change, and the oil and gas industry plays a substantial role in global methane emissions. Acknowledging this responsibility, TotalEnergies has undertaken several initiatives over the years to reduce methane emissions throughout its operations. Since 2022, the company has maintained a clear objective of achieving near-zero methane emissions across its operated Upstream assets by 2030. This strategy is based on two essential principles: ensuring accurate measurement of methane emissions and continuously implementing measures to reduce and eliminate avoidable emissions.

According to Namita Shah, President of OneTech at TotalEnergies, real-time data has become a practical tool for making industrial operations safer, more dependable, more efficient, and more sustainable. She emphasized that the successful application of digital technologies and artificial intelligence depends on the combination of advanced technological systems and the expertise of skilled personnel. With high-quality data, dedicated teams, and innovative digital solutions such as MethaneLive, TotalEnergies aims to make technology a critical contributor to the global effort to reduce methane emissions and advance more sustainable energy production.

Market Impact: The introduction of MethaneLive by TotalEnergies is expected to strengthen the sustainability, efficiency, and reliability of upstream oil and natural gas operations. By leveraging real-time monitoring, advanced analytics, and AI-based detection, the system enables faster identification and repair of methane leaks, reducing product losses and improving the utilization of natural gas resources. This can enhance operational stability and support lower emissions across the energy value chain.

For products dependent on natural gas feedstocks, including ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, and urea, improved methane management may contribute to a more secure and consistent supply environment. The adoption of predictive maintenance and data-driven decision-making can also reduce unexpected shutdowns, improve production efficiency, and support long-term cost optimization for energy and chemical manufacturers.

In terms of chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, the immediate price impact is expected to remain largely neutral, as MethaneLive does not directly increase production capacity or significantly alter global supply-demand fundamentals. However, over the long term, improved operational efficiency and reduced methane losses could support stable natural gas availability and moderate production costs. Consequently, gas-based chemicals such as ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, and urea may witness stable to slightly bearish pricing trends due to enhanced efficiency and improved supply reliability across the industry.
